Dear bloggers, Why do you blog?

Walk in clothes with clothes and shoes

While browsing through a few WordPress articles the other day I stumbled across one titled, “First Steps with WordPress.” The article did a good job familiarizing beginners with WordPress functions and layouts. As I read further in the article I came across a set of questions. It made me think about heranyx.com. My focus and purpose behind creating this blog in the first place. It inspired me to write this post. I want to share my thoughts with you so, here are the  questions along with my answers. Read and enjoy them!

1. What am I going to do with this?

I’m going to use this blog to shake things up in the fashion world

2. Who is going to read this?

You, because you’re willing to listen and you’re intrigued by things past the surface

3. What kind of information will I be posting?

It’s fashion from my point of view. My passion, my journey, my thoughts & my visions

4. Why am I doing this?

I view things differently so, I want you to see where I’m coming from. Fashion is my outlet to express myself. It’s not just about the clothes. It’s about creative freedom. It’s about the visions in my head and finding ways to bring them to you. And sometimes I can’t find the words to help you understand. So, I paint pictures through my clothes, through my camera, and through other people. I’m doing this because this is who I am. There’s a story to tell and there’s a new light to share with the world.

5. Who am I doing this for?

I’m doing this for me and for you… the passionate, ambitious, & creative souls

6. How often am I going to be posting and adding information?

I promise not to force a post.  I believe in quality over quantity. I write when I’m inspired, I take pictures when I have a vision, and I post when I have something to share with the world.

Now, it’s your turn. Leave a comment below introducing yourself and your blog, then answer the questions above. Feel free to answer all the questions or just a few. It’s still early in the New Year of 2013 and this is a great exercise for you & your blog! I look forward to hearing your thoughts & checking out your blog!

My New Job Promotion!

You know that job promotion I told you about a few posts ago? Well, let’s talk specifics. I began working at Gap in July and in September I got promoted. I am now the Women’s Stylist for Gap at SouthPark Mall in Charlotte, North Carolina! As exciting as that is, there’s more. I manage the Gap SouthPark Instagram (@Gap_SouthPark) and I am currently creating a blog for my store. I am beyond excited for this opportunity. Everything is new and it couldn’t have been at a more perfect time. The blog will be launching soon and I’m very anxious but patience is a very important part of this process.

Gap SouthPark Blog Shoot

Since I’m being specific, I might as well tell you that I was on Good Morning Charlotte (WBTV) in October. They were doing a segment on the Simon Fashion Show, a fashion show that takes place at SouthPark Mall, and I got a chance to showcase a look from our store. It was my first time on the news and it so happened to be a live segment. I’m glad I did pretty well because it was no room for a second take.

Hand to Heart Center for NYE!

I have to enter the NEW YEAR harnessing good energy and a positive attitude. This year I wanted to participate in something peaceful and mentally stimulating. I told my friend that I would be hand to heart center for New Year’s Eve (a prayer position in yoga). He probably thought I was joking, but I was too serious. I started attending yoga classes a few months ago and was thrilled to find out that there was a special New Year’s Eve class at 8th Street Studio in Charlotte (talk about speaking it into existence). It was everything in one… meditation, chanting, asanas, self-reflection, and more.

Of course I attended and I have to admit it was pretty amazing! 10pm to midnight. A solid two hours of good energy. It was a great way to start 2013.During the session we were instructed to participate in two writing activities. One, was a letter that we wrote to ourselves about what 2013 would be like. The plan was that the instructors would mail our letters back to us some time in the new year of 2013. The second activity consisted of us writing down a list of things that we wanted leave behind in 2012. Five minutes shy of midnight everyone set their list to flames… literally. It was a good feeling watching those pieces of paper burn.

We can’t undo the things in our past, but we can learn from them and move forward. Everyday that you’re given is a new day. To see a NEW YEAR is a blessing! I felt good as I left the studio. I felt it in my spirit. It was a similar feeling that I felt last year, but much more profound. I’m thankful for the year 2012. It revealed another level of who I am. Now, I look forward to the year 2013!

peace, love, & prosperity!

How did you spend your New Year’s Eve? What do you plan on leaving behind in the year 2012? What are you looking forward to in the year 2013?

Colorblock Socks!

I AM A SOCK FANATIC! Growing up I bought different kind of funky socks. From ankle socks, to knee high socks, to toe socks. I had almost every pattern and color you could imagine. Anyway, I was getting dressed for work and I decided to wear my newest purchase. Navy and white stripe colorblock socks.

My socks were the inspiration for my look. It was the first thing I knew I wanted to wear so; I built my outfit from that. I wanted the hot pink blocking to show so, I pulled my socks over my jeans. From that point everything else just fell into place. I grabbed my wedges to add height, oxford shirt to layer, and my nubby terry hoodie for texture. Oh, and my hair played right along with my relaxed yet edgy ensemble. Done deal!

I have a thing for elbow patches!

In between my busy schedule I’m aiming to post at least one outfit a week. A painted picture of my mood. Moods by Hera Nyx.

My Serengeti Bracelet from Fifth & Orient!

I have to admit that Leah from Fifth & Orient Jewelry Company has an idea for the type of jewelry I like to wear. If you remember my previous posts, The Belora Metal Choker and Louvre Clover Stud Earrings, then you’ve witnessed the kind of jewelry that Fifth & Orient carries. When Leah and I spoke she told me she had something that screamed Hera. I was intrigued by her statement and quite anxious to see what she had in mind. Soon enough I received a package.

Leah was right. The Serengeti Bracelet definitely screams Hera. I tend to gravitate towards things associated with wildlife animals so, a zebra bracelet was a good choice.

Pulling my outfit and accessories together took no time at all.

When you’re able to put an outfit together according to your mood your style becomes you. It’s how you feel and it’s the confidence in your walk.  Most of time I don’t have an exact word for my mood. I can paint a picture of it though. So, the long sleeve black V-neck, the black faux leather vest, distressed jeans, animal print booties, my big puff, and a red lip was my painting for the day.

Much love and thanks to Leah, Christine, and Phuong, the creators of Fifth & Orient. Be sure to check back on HeraNyx.com.  You might get a chance to receive your own Fifth & Orient jewel.

Where have you been Hera?

You’re probably wondering

What’s going on with Hera and www.heranyx.com? It’s been weeks (practically a month) since I published a new post and if you’re an avid Hera Nyxan you know that’s a bit unusual. The past few weeks have been CRAZY!! Good crazy and bad crazy. It started off with laptop issues (system crash), car issues, and finding a place to live issues. It was one thing after another. The only thing I could control was my thoughts and I tried to keep them positive. Eventually things started to look up. I found an apartment, I got a new job (then a promotion), and I started a new project with a local fashion photographer!! Everything was happening so fast (the good and the bad) and I wasn’t able to write up new posts. I used the last week in September to bring some organization to my life and now I’m refreshed and ready to get started for the month of October.

pretty interesting fortune cookie messages…

I’m thrilled about everything that’s happening right now and extremely thankful. For October there will be more giveaways, styling tricks and tips, inspiration posts, Moods by Hera Nyx (outfit posts), and a few surprises along the way. As always, feel free to subscribe via e-mail so that you’re notified about each new post. You can also follow me on Twitter. Let’s stay connected!

The Belora Metal Choker Necklace from Fifth & Orient

The Belora Metal Choker from Fifth & Orient

About a week ago I received the Belora Metal Choker from Fifth & Orient Jewelry Company. The minute I opened the package I knew what kind of look I wanted to go for. Before I explain let me introduce you to Fifth & Orient.

The Story Behind Fifth & Orient

Fifth and Orient is a company founded by Christina Burke, Leah Morris, and Phuong Ly. It all began when they were discussing possible ways to feel more empowered as a woman. While conversing, the idea of starting a business came up. Owning a business was something they had never done before. It seemed risky and daunting, but they decided to accept the challenge. In the summer of 2012 Christina, Leah, and Phuong launched their online jewelry and accessory company, Fifth & Orient.

Fifth and Orient’s goal is to provide a diverse assortment of quality products for the fashion forward, confident woman while giving her a refreshing convenient shopping experience. They aim to appeal to women ages 20 all the way to 60. Their pieces range from subtle classics to eclectic and unexpected statements. Each item is functional and beautiful.

Q & A with F & O

HeraNyx: How did the name Fifth & Orient come about?

Fifth&Orient: “The house we lived in was located on the corner of 5th street and Orient Street”

HeraNyx: Tell me one interesting fact about each of you?

Fifth&Orient: “Leah is an avid world traveler and has been to 17 countries so far. Christina is a paleo driven Crossfitter who loves pink and Phuong has three birthdays and she celebrates all three.”

HeraNyx: What is the location of your company?

Fifth&Orient: “Our home base is in Chico, California but our partners travel often and work out of New York and LA as well”

HeraNyx: Is Fifth & Orient a website only company?

Fifth&Orient: “Yes we are exclusively online.”

HeraNyx:
How are items selected?

Fifth&Orient: “Our pieces are strongly influenced by our goal to help make women feel put together and polished while maintaining a sense of pizzazz that we all possess. We select products from around the world…from independent jewelry designers to large companies.
”

HeraNyx: What are some future goals for Fifth and Orient?

Fifth&Orient: “A big goal that will actually be reached shortly is to sell our products internationally. Another goal is to someday provide jobs for people through employment with our company.”

They are a very diverse group of women: a mixture of Chinese, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Filipino, and Portuguese. They are passionate, dedicated, and extremely motivated. Although, Fifth and Orient is just beginning they have some pretty big goals for the future. I support and look forward to their future endeavors. Outfit Inspired by the Belora Metal Choker

The Belora Metal Choker is sleek, sultry, and simple. Everything about this necklace screams… H E R A N Y X. I knew that I wanted to wear something strapless and I had to rock my fro. So, with this vision I chose my grey Banana Republic strapless maxi dress. It worked perfectly. It’s a great length and it’s flattering. I could have added bracelets and or a ring, but I wanted to keep my look bare. I love the simplicity of this choker. You can wear it during the day or evening. If you’re not a fan of this rhodium tone, Fifth and Orient also carries this piece Gold
