Graduating from Johnson & Wales University_ Class of 2012

Magna Cum Laude, Miss Hera Nyx

I officially graduated from Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte, NC

with a BS in Fashion Merchandising & Retail Marketing

What an experience… mentally, physically, and emotionally. In college you make friends, lose friends, lose yourself and find yourself. Freshman year was all about enjoyment. Not so much the studies, but I still managed to get good grades.  My sophomore, junior, & senior year was all about self discovery, better decision making, and managing my time. Each year was a lesson.

Of course learning is a big part of school, but it’s more than classroom study. You’ve got to go beyond the books, the syllabus, and the teachers. I didn’t depend on people to provide all the information I needed. I killed my curiosity, took advantage of my resources, and devised a plan of action. I didn’t forget to have fun though. College doesn’t have to be so serious.

I didn’t  have much excitement for graduation at first; I just knew I was ready to be done.  I will admit, the day I picked up my cap and gown I was little bit excited… that’s when it started to sink in. Then, on May 19, 2012 at 10am in the Time Warner Cable Arena, I graduated.

It felt good walking across that stage! I set out a goal and I accomplished it… that’s big. The journey wasn’t easy but the end result was worth it. I’m proud of myself!

Congrats to all my fellow graduates, the future holds way more than we can imagine. Never give up and always dream BIG!

You can call me Hera for short. I would describe myself as a free spirit, eccentric, wild flower; lover of fashion, art, and everything in between. My mind is filled with soooo many ideas…it gets kind of crazy up there. I’m working on perfecting the translation, but sometimes I wish I could just take a snap-shot of my visions instead. I’m all for trial and error though. It makes life thrilling. You know… taking risks, succeeding, trying, and failing, with intentions to be better. All in all I feel good about where I am in life. I’m sure of myself. Like Janelle Monae said, “I feel myself truly becoming the fearless person I have dreamt of being.”
